Lactation Clinic

Synonym(s):

Breastfeeding provides the best nutrition for your baby, is more easily digested and contains antibodies that help your baby fight germs. It also reduces the mother’s risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and enhances bonding between mother and baby.

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF in 1991. It is a global initiative to implement practices that protect, promote and support breastfeeding.
A maternity facility is designated ‘baby friendly” when it does not accept free or low cost breast milk substitutes, does not use feeding bottles or teats, and has implemented the following Ten Specific Steps to support successful breastfeeding -
  1. Breastfeeding policy
  2. Training of health care staff in skills
  3. Patient education
  4. Skin-to-skin-contact: Initiate breastfeeding within a half-hour of birth.
  5. Lactation maintained even if separated from newborn
  6. Newborn infants get no food or drink other than breast milk, unless medically indicated
  7. Rooming-in with mothers and infants 24 hours a day
  8. Breastfeeding on demand
  9. No artificial teats or pacifiers to breastfeeding infants
  10. Breastfeeding support groups
Singapore General Hospital is a Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)-accredited hospital. Our team will provide support for skin-to-skin contact after both vaginal deliveries and Caesarean sections, and will help you and your baby learn to breastfeed after delivery.
