Giving birth at SGH

Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful moments in life. An important step in the journey towards being a parent is the preparation for the birth of your child. At Singapore General Hospital (SGH), we will support and take care of each step of the way.

Our maternity packages are designed with mothers like you in mind to cater to your care and comfort along this special journey. You may consult our O&G Centre for details on maternity packages during your first visit.

SGH Maternity Unit

Our team of doctors, midwives, and nurses is dedicated to caring for you and your baby in a warm, supportive, and safe environment. As part of a leading tertiary referral centre with a wide range of medical and surgical specialties, we are equipped to provide the highest level of care for women with complex or high-risk pregnancies.

We are also a Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)- accredited hospital since 2013. This means we follow best practices that support bonding and breastfeeding, including early skin-to-skin contact after birth, rooming-in so your baby stays with you, and guidance for early and successful breastfeeding.

Our maternity unit consists of:

  • 8 Delivery Suites
  • Neonatal Intensive Care unit
  • High Dependency Care Unit
  • Nursery

Postnatal Ward

  • 8 Single Rooms
  • 4 bedded room – 16 beds
  • 5 bedded room – 10 beds

Delivery Suite

The delivery suite comprises of 8 single-bedded, air-conditioned delivery suites.

Each delivery suite is well equipped with all the essential items that may be required for the mother or baby during & after delivery. We have a team of trained doctors and experienced midwives to guide you through the delivery process.

In the event of an emergency caesarean during delivery, the delivery suite provides a direct route to the operating theatre to achieve delivery within the shortest time. Husbands are encouraged to support their wives during labour and delivery.

Antenatal / Postnatal Ward – Ward 53A (Block 5 Level 3)

Our antenatal and postnatal ward offers various room options to ensure your comfort during this special time. Each room type is designed to support your recovery and bonding with your baby.

Room Amenities

  • Wardrobe
  • Personal bedside locker
  • Mini refrigerator
  • Safe box
  • Sofa bed

We offer a menu with a variety of cuisines, including halal and vegetarian options, as well as Chinese confinement meals. Visitors are welcome during our designated visiting hours. Your spouse, or one nominated caregiver, is also welcome to stay overnight to support you during your stay.

Our lactation consultant and nurses will support you with breastfeeding after delivery, including assisting with the baby’s latch and providing guidance for challenges that you may face.

We also encourage rooming-in with your baby. Keeping your baby in the same room helps with bonding, supports successful breastfeeding, and allows you and your partner to gain confidence in understanding and responding to your baby’s cues.

Average length of Stay*

  • 24 hours for Vaginal Delivery
  • 48 hours for Assisted Delivery
  • 2-3 Days for Caesarean Section

Single Room - Type A1 Ward

Baby Ward

Located within Ward 53 Antenatal/Postnatal ward, your baby's health will be monitored daily by our experienced nurses and doctors. During your stay, we encourage you to take part in your baby's care to help you gain confidence and prepare for caring for your baby at home.

Our Neonatal HD and ICU are located at Ward 53D/E, on the same level as the maternity ward. These specially designed units provide advanced medical care for newborns who need closer monitoring, with our team of experienced and specially trained nurses and doctors ensuring continuous care around the clock.
