Breastfeeding- Simple tips to a successful start

Congratulations on the birth of your baby! Trying to breastfeed and feeling overwhelmed? Hear from our doctors and nurses as they share simple tips to establish milk supply and enjoy a successful breastfeeding experience.

How do I feed my baby?

Breastfeeding is the best way to provide nourishment for a baby because it offers the perfect balance of nutrients tailored specifically for their growth and development. Breast milk contains essential antibodies that help strengthen the baby’s immune system, protecting them from infections and illnesses. It is easily digestible, reducing the risk of constipation or upset stomach. Beyond physical health, breastfeeding also promotes bonding between mother and baby through close skin-to-skin contact, offering emotional comfort and security. Additionally, breast milk adapts to the baby’s changing needs, making it a natural and personalized source of nutrition in the early stages of life.

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF in 1991. It is a global initiative to implement practices that protect, promote and support breastfeeding. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months which provides the best nutrition for your baby.

SGH is a BFHI accredited hospital, we are committed to encourage and support mothers to achieve their breastfeeding success. Our lactation consultants and nurses will assist you on breastfeeding latching and other breastfeeding issues during your hospital stay.

Breastfeeding support and milk expression during hospital stay

During your hospital stay, our lactation consultants together with the lactation trained ward nurses will provide support and guidance to help mother with breastfeeding techniques. Our team will guide you on how to massage your breast and assist your baby to latch on correctly.

If your baby is unable to breastfed directly due to medical reasons, you are encouraged to express your breast milk 3 hourly to prevent engorgement and to initiate lactation. This ensures that your baby can still receive the nutritious colostrum.

If you are medically unable to feed, SGH will provide ready-to-feed (RTF) formula milk. Please note that, for safety reasons, milk powder from external sources is not allowed.
