Leading Critical Care Nephrology: Life-Saving Kidney Support When It Matters Most

Our Critical Care Nephrology Service is led by experience nephrologists who specialise in managing complex kidney conditions in critically ill patients. These specialists have advanced expertise in critical care medicine, including managing acute kidney injury (AKI), maintaining acid-base balance, and correcting fluid and electrolyte disorders.

We provide life-saving acute extra-corporeal blood purification services, for patients with acute or chronic kidney injury who are admitted to the Intensive Care Units (ICUs), High Dependency Units or Intermediate Care Areas (ICAs). These therapies support patients whose kidneys are unable to effectively remove toxins and excess fluid from the body.

In addition to dialysis-based therapies, we also offer Therapeutic aphresis, a specialized treatment used to remove harmful antibodies, proteins, or toxins from the blood. Therapeutic aphresis is used in a range of immune-mediated and renal conditions, and is an integral part of our comprehensive extracorporeal therapy services.

Our comprehensive range of treatments includes:

  • Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT): A gentle, continuous dialysis treatment designed for critically ill patients. It comes in several forms: Continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF), Continuous venovenous hemodialysis (CVVHD), Continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH). These therapies help steadily remove toxins, waste products, and excess fluids from the blood over a prolonged period, reducing strain on the patient's cardiovascular system
  • Prolonged Intermittent Renal Replacement Therapy (PIRRT): A hybrid therapy that combines the benefits for continuous and intermittent dialysis, allowing for flexible and efficient treatment sessions tailored to the patient’s condition
  • Therapeutic Plasmapheresis and Immunoadsorption: Specialised treatments that remove harmful antibodies or proteins, often used for autoimmune and blood-related conditions
  • Our critical care nephrology team works closely with intensivists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver personalised and timely care, improving outcomes for patients with severe kidney and critical illnesses.

Committed to Education and Training

In addition to delivering expert clinical care, the team is deeply committed to medical education and knowledge-sharing. We organise annual training courses for healthcare professionals, including:

  • Critical Care Nephrology Course, which covers the principles and practices of extracorporeal therapies in critically ill patients
  • Fluid, Electrolyte, and Acid-Base Disturbances Course, focusing on the diagnosis and management of complex metabolic conditions in acute care settings

Through these initiatives, SGH continues to build capability and raise standards in critical care nephrology, both locally and in the region.
