The Department of Renal Medicine, Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is the oldest and largest renal unit in Singapore. Since its establishment in 1973, the department has been a national leader in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of kidney disease. Today, it serves as the premier referral centre in Singapore for patients with complex kidney disorders, and provides consultancy to hospitals in the region. The department is known for its clinical expertise, commitment to research, and dedication to nurturing the next generation of kidney specialists.

We offer a full spectrum of renal services, from preventive care and early detection to kidney replacement therapies and transplant care. Our work is supported by strong collaborations across medical, surgical, nursing, allied health, and research teams.

Renal Support and Services

  • Advanced Practice Nurses: Provide specialised renal care across diverse specialties, support research and education efforts, and participate in training and knowledge sharing locally and internationally.
  • Renal Coordinator Unit: Provides education and counselling on kidney disease progression, dialysis preparation, and financial counselling.
  • Transplant Coordinator Unit: Oversees evaluation and coordination of transplant patients and donors, and leads community outreach efforts.
  • Renal Laboratory: Performs diagnostic and research functions including renal biopsy processing, immunopathology testing, and research into kidney disease biology.
