HAEMATOLOGY

Haematological tests can be grouped according to the type of haematological conditions or certain clinical situations that require investigations. The following is a list of guidelines for various haematological tests, some are for routine screening and others are for specialised investigations. Please indicate individual tests in each group on the request form.

Full Blood Count

• Haemoglobin, red cell indices, white cell count and platelet count
• White cell differentials. Blood film morphology can be ordered as an additional request.

Coagulation Screen

• PT/APTT
• 50% plasma corrections for PT/APTT, if (a) is prolonged

Haemostasis Tests

• Clotting Factor assays
• Clotting Factor Inhibitors assays
• Von Willebrand factor antigen and Ristocetin co-factor
• Platelet Function Tests
• Bleeding Time

Anti-Coagulation Monitoring

• Heparin – APTT
• Warfarin – PT/INR
• Low molecular weight heparin
  • no monitoring required except for renal, paediatric and elderly patients
  • anti Xa assay on special request

DIC Screen

• PT/APTT
