Research Institute

Synonym(s):

We are proud to introduce the new SGH Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery Research Institute, a dedicated centercentre committed to advancing research in hand and upper limb surgery. The institute aims to foster innovation and scientific discoveries through strong academic collaborations with partners across various fields, including engineers, neuroscientists, and epidemiologists. Additionally, we have established close ties with developmental biologists to investigate congenital hand differences and other malformations, aiming to improve understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of these complex conditions. This initiative underscores our commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and delivering cutting-edge care through research excellence.

Research Initiatives

  • Biomechanical Studies: Investigating the mechanical properties and functions of the hand and upper limb tissues to improve surgical techniques and device design.
  • Robotic Hand Surgery: Developing and refining robotic-assisted procedures to enhance precision, safety, and outcomes in hand and upper limb surgeries.
  • Tissue Engineering: Exploring regenerative approaches for hand reconstruction, including the development of bioengineered tissues and scaffolds.
  • Developmental Biology: Investigating the aetiology of congenital hand differences and translating these findings into improved surgical techniques, regenerative medicine and other treatments
  • Spasticity: Studying the underlying mechanisms and pathophysiology of spasticity affecting the upper limb to identify targeted treatment strategies.
  • Clinical Outcomes: Assessing the effectiveness and safety of surgical interventions and treatments to inform best practices.
  • Patient-Reported Outcome Studies: Gathering patient feedback and quality of life measures to evaluate the impact of interventions from the patient's perspective.
