Liver & Pancreas Support Group

Living with liver or pancreas conditions can be challenging, both physically and emotionally. Patients and caregivers may face long treatment journeys, lifestyle adjustments, and feelings of uncertainty or isolation along the way.

Established in 2017, the Liver & Pancreas Support Group at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) was created to help patients and caregivers rediscover their sense of self and find strength through connection. The group provides emotional, mental, and social support for individuals managing complex liver and pancreas conditions. What began as a small group of 15–20 members has grown into a close‑knit community of 65–70 active members, offering encouragement, understanding, and shared experiences.

The group supports individuals through every stage of their liver and pancreas health journey, providing emotional, mental, and social well-being beyond the clinical setting. At the heart of our group is a simple belief, no one should have to face this journey alone. Through connection, shared experiences, and ongoing support, we strive to help every member find strength, resilience, and hope along the way. Because even through the most difficult moments, we believe that you rise again.

Who this is for

• Individuals living with liver conditions including liver cancer / bile duct cancer
• Individuals living with pancreas conditions including those who are undergoing or have undergone surgery, or treatment
• Individuals who would like to stay connected with a supportive community through shared experiences and peer support following their liver or pancreas health journey
• Family members, caregivers, and loved ones supporting them

How we help patients with liver & pancreas health conditions

• Emotional and peer support through shared experiences and mutual encouragement
• Holistic wellness activities such as art therapy, music, gardening, and wellness programmes
• Educational talks and workshops conducted by healthcare professionals
• Community‑building activities, including a ukulele and singing group, which has performed at events to foster joy and connection
• A hiking team that promotes physical well‑being, confidence, and camaraderie among members
• Regular activities organised every 3 monthly to keep members engaged and connected
• Ongoing peer support through a WhatsApp chat group, allowing members to stay in touch and support one another

The group works closely with healthcare professionals and collaborates with hospitals such as Changi General Hospital (CGH), and Sengkang General Hospital (SKH), as well as other organisations. Support focuses on the emotional, social, and mental aspects of living with liver or pancreas conditions, complementing medical care rather than replacing it.

Awards & recognition

• May 2021 – Singapore Health Inspirational Patient and Caregiver Award, received by Ms Julianah Bee as the group’s representative
• 27 May 2021 – Dr Peter Mack was featured in a Channel NewsAsia interview highlighting the success of the support group
• May 2023 – Inspirational Patient Award awarded posthumously to James Lau, received by his family
• May 2024 – Inspirational Patient Award awarded to James Wong, a member of the group
• May 2024 – Inspirational Caregiver Award awarded to Hazelyne Tay, caregiver and member of the group
• May 2026 – Inspirational Patient Award awarded to Ruo Shae Loong, a member of the group
