Eating Disorders Support Group

Synonym(s):

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that affect a person’s thoughts, emotions, eating behaviours, and physical health. These conditions may involve restrictive eating, bingeing, purging, or compulsive exercise, and often coexist with anxiety, depression, or low self-worth. Because eating and body image are closely tied to daily life, individuals affected by eating disorders may feel isolated, overwhelmed, or unsure of how to seek help.

The SGH Eating Disorders Support Group provides a safe, confidential space where individuals affected by eating disorders — as well as their loved ones — can come together to share experiences and receive support. The group complements SGH’s multidisciplinary approach to care, which addresses both the physical and psychosocial aspects of eating disorders through a team of healthcare professionals.

Support groups within SGH play an important role in providing emotional and psychological support, helping patients and caregivers feel less alone by connecting with others who are facing similar challenges. Through guided discussions and shared experiences, participants can find understanding, encouragement, and reassurance along their recovery journey.

Who this is for

  • Individuals affected by eating disorders at any stage of recovery
  • Family members, caregivers, and loved ones supporting someone with an eating disorder

How we support individuals with eating disorders

  • A safe and confidential environment for sharing experiences, feelings, and challenges
  • Peer support that fosters connection with others who understand the recovery journey
  • Guided discussions led by trained facilitators, focusing on coping strategies and relapse prevention
  • Opportunities to learn practical tools for managing urges, thoughts, and emotional triggers
  • Access to insights and perspectives from both healthcare professionals and peer participants

Sessions are conducted in a compassionate and non-judgmental setting, where participants are encouraged to engage at their own pace. Emphasis is placed on respect, privacy, and creating a space where individuals feel heard and understood.

Through regular engagement, the group aims to support individuals and their loved ones in building coping skills, strengthening emotional resilience, and taking meaningful steps towards recovery and overall well-being.
