Colorectal Cancer Support Group | Singapore General Hospital

Living with colorectal cancer often means adapting to new routines, decisions and changes in daily life. Many patients and caregivers find it helpful to hear from others who have been through similar experiences and understand the practical and emotional challenges involved.

The Colorectal Cancer Support Group, now renamed CR47 (no, nothing to do with the footballer!), at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) was established by the Department of Colorectal Surgery and officially launched by Dr Gerrard Ee in 2004. The group is supported by SGH nurses and healthcare teams, and strengthened by trained Volunteer Patient Ambassadors who are past or present patients. Over the years, it has grown with the support of medical social workers, a genetic counsellor and institutional leadership.

CR47 aims to offer a supportive community where patients and families can share experiences, learn from one another, and feel supported beyond medical treatment. Through connection and peer support, the group hopes to help patients and caregivers navigate their journey with greater confidence and reassurance.

How we help patients with colorectal cancer

Peer support from trained Volunteer Patient Ambassadors with lived experience of colorectal cancer

Group activities such as sharing sessions and gatherings that foster connection and mutual encouragement

The group is facilitated by SGH healthcare professionals together with Volunteer Patient Ambassadors who have received training and ongoing support from medical social workers. This allows ambassadors to provide meaningful peer support while knowing where to seek help when challenges arise.

CR47 focuses on emotional and peer support rather than medical treatment, and participation complements the care patients already receive at SGH. Support sessions typically involve listening, sharing experiences and offering encouragement in a safe, respectful environment. There is no long‑term commitment required.
