Amputee Support Group

Synonym(s):

Adjusting to life after limb loss is a significant journey that involves physical, emotional, and social changes. Whether you are facing an upcoming surgery or are already on the road to recovery, it is natural to have concerns about your daily routine and your emotional well-being. We understand that amputation does not just affect the individual but also has a deep impact on family members and caregivers as well. Our support group was created to ensure that no one has to navigate these challenges alone.

The Amputee Support Group was established in February 1999 as a non‑profit support group to help individuals with limb loss - empowering members through education, shared experiences, and mutual encouragement. The aim of our group is to promote independence, confidence, and quality of life after amputation. By bringing together people who have gone through similar experiences, our group provides a safe and supportive space where members and caregivers can learn, connect, and adapt together.

Who this is for

  • SGH patients with limb loss
  • Caregivers, family members, and significant others who are involved in the patient’s care and recovery
  • Participation is limited to SGH patients and their caregivers

How we support our members

  • Peer support, where members share experiences, challenges, and coping strategies with others who understand life after amputation
  • Education and information sharing to help members better understand adaptation, daily living, and emotional adjustment
  • Emotional encouragement and advocacy, supporting confidence, resilience, and independence in a safe group setting

The group is facilitated with the involvement of SGH healthcare professionals, including nurses who support and guide discussions. Our activities focus on shared learning and mutual support rather than medical treatment, and participation in the support group is intended to be a supportive and reassuring experience. Members can expect opportunities to listen, share if they are comfortable, and learn from others who are at different stages of adjustment. Caregivers are welcomed, we recognise the important role they play and the impact amputation can have on the whole family.
