Shakers’ Hyolaryngeal Exercise (Unmodified)

Objective

To strengthen the throat muscles (suprahyoid muscles) so as to improve the safety of swallow.

Instructions

​(!) Please only do these exercises as prescribed by a Speech Therapist to avoid hurting yourself while doing so.
  1. Lay flat on your back with your arms by your side.
  2. Lift only your head to look at your toes.
  3. Hold for 1 minute, then lower your head and relax. Do this 3 times.

Next, hold for 1 second, but repeat 30 times.
Repeat this 3 times daily.

Precautions

  • Ensure that you feel the stretch on your throat muscles, not the back of your neck.
  • If you have had a head or neck surgery, please check with your doctor or therapist before starting these exercises.
  • If these exercises cause pain or numbness, stop doing them immediately and inform your doctor or therapist.
