What is a BMD Test?
A bone mineral density (BMD) test uses X-rays to measure your bone density. Osteoporosis is diagnosed when you have abnormally low bone density. This means that your bones are more fragile and prone to fractures.
What to do before the test?
Clothing
Please wear loose-fitting clothing without any buttons or metallic accessories such as hooks, zippers, or belts. You may be asked to remove your clothing and put on a hospital gown.
Dietary preparation
- Fasting is not required, you may eat and drink as usual.
- Avoid taking calcium supplements for 24 hours before.
Medical leave
No medical leave will be issued. A time chit can be provided upon request.
During the Test
You will be lying down on the examination table and be required to remain still. The imaging process generally does not cause any discomfort and the whole procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Should there be any concerns or discomfort during the examination, please inform the staff attending to you.
Many of our patients are elderly and some may require additional assistance, as such we may not be able to keep strictly to the schedule. Your understanding is greatly appreciated.
