Fellowship

Synonym(s):

Diagnostic Neuroradiology and Head and Neck Radiology

As a team that works closely with clinical specialists from National Neuroscience Institute (NNI), Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), National Cancer Centre Singapore(NCCS), and the SGH Otolaryngology Department, the Department of Neuroradiology at SGH sees a large volume of diverse neuroradiological conditions.

Fellows will have an opportunity to train with a friendly group of experienced neuroradiologists that have international links. Our neuroradiologists are passionate about education, research, innovation (3D printing), quality, and new models of care.

My neuroradiology fellowship at the Singapore General Hospital in 2023 to 2024 was incredibly enriching. I was fortunate to work with an extremely competent team of neuroradiologists who graciously welcomed me into their fold.

It was an opportunity of a lifetime for me. This was a high-volume centre which provided me with a wealth of hands-on opportunities. The range of cases was vast, each with unique levels of complexity. I encountered cases unique to the region that I would otherwise not have experienced. Prior to this fellowship, I had almost no practical experience with advanced neuroimaging. Thus, perfusion imaging, tractography, vessel wall imaging, nigrosome and Meniere studies, among others were some of the highlights of my stay.

Being a part of a well-established workflow was priceless. Appreciating the dynamics of patient care and an efficient workflow that prioritises quality improvement strategies will greatly impact my practice. It was quite fulfilling to witness firsthand the significant impact neuroimaging protocols had on imaging outcomes. Some of these I have been able to incorporate into our workflow since being back home, while I work on several other potential changes.

What also set their fellowship training apart was the opportunity to benefit from both neuroradiology and head and neck expertise throughout the program.

There were multiple research opportunities including sessions on advanced studies. These have contributed to my personal growth and development.

Overall, I believe I have grown in leaps and bounds and my diagnostic accuracy is much improved. I benefited from mentorship, professional growth, and great camaraderie.

Singapore boasts of a rich cultural heritage and a love for food which I greatly enjoyed. I was drawn to the country's remarkable greenery and preservation of green spaces. One of the profound virtues so quintessential to the island was the pervasive strong work ethic and dedication to service - definitely great reminders of an enriching experience.

I am deeply grateful for the exceptional training and mentorship I received during my neuroimaging fellowship in 2011 and head and neck imaging fellowship in 2023 at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). These fellowships have been transformative, significantly advancing my expertise and shaping my career in diagnostic radiology.

In 2011, under the outstanding mentorship of Dr Lim Eng Hoe Winston and his team, I gained comprehensive training in basic and advanced neuroimaging techniques, including functional MRI and perfusion scans. This experience provided a solid foundation in managing complex neurovascular and neuro-oncology cases.

Returning in 2023 for the head and neck imaging fellowship, I was fortunate to work with Dr Robert Chen and his team that expanded my expertise to include advanced techniques in head and neck oncology and skull base imaging. The fellowship’s focus on cutting-edge technology, collaborative learning, and multidisciplinary case discussions was invaluable in refining my diagnostic approach.

These experiences have profoundly influenced my career as a neuroradiologist, researcher, and educator, empowering me to deliver high-quality patient care and contribute to advancements in the field.

Both experiences were transformative, with opportunities to engage in multidisciplinary tumor boards, present research at international forums, and learn in a collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment.

I wholeheartedly recommend the neuroimaging and head and neck imaging fellowships at SGH to anyone aspiring to excel in radiology.

Training Programme and Objectives

The purpose of this local fellowship programme is to provide the requisite exposure, hands-on training and reporting experience and framework for fellows to independently report Neurological and Head & Neck examinations upon completion of training.

By the end of the programme, the fellow should be able to identify, interpret, and independently report a wide spectrum of basic Neuroradiology and Head & Neck pathology to aid in the management of trauma, stroke, cancer, infection, inflammatory and neurodegenerative conditions. SGH does not perform paediatric neuroradiology as paediatric Neuro, Head & Neck radiology is performed in Singapore’s paediatric hospital, KKH.

The fellow should gain proficiency in interpretating the following multi-modality studies: - CT/CTA of the head, face, orbits, paranasal sinuses, and neck - MRI/MRA/MRV/DWI of the brain, cranial nerves, internal auditory canal, orbits, pituitary gland, neck, postnasal space, and spine - Ultrasound of the head and neck region, including thyroid and parotid glands.

SGH also performs a number of advanced neuroimaging techniques, some of which are only performed in a few centres in the world. These help in the medical and surgical management of brain tumours, Parkinson’s disease, hydrocephalus, vasculopathy, parathyroid adenomas, and Meniere’s disease.

The fellow will gain exposure to: - MR Spectroscopy - MR Perfusion (DSC and DCE) - Functional MRI and Tractography - SMWI for Nigrosome Neurodegeneration (Parkinson’s disease) - CSF flow examinations for normal pressure hydrocephalus - Dual Energy CT scans (mostly neck examinations) - 4D parathyroid CT - Inner ear MRI for Hydrops/Meniere’s disease.

Admission Criteria

Minimum requirements for all fellows:
  • Postgraduate medical qualification in Radiology e.g., FRCR, MMed or equivalent
  • 2 years of postgraduate training experience in relevant specialty
  • Proven competency in English language (to fulfil Singapore Medical Council’s criteria for medical registration for clinical fellowship)
