SGH and the Community

SGH believes that the best way to offer significant value to the community is by leveraging on our strengths in healthcare and health promotion. A firm believer of “Prevention is better than cure”, our outreach activities aim to increase the quality and years of healthy life and prevent illness and disability of our nation.

We actively support and respond to local needs by combining our healthcare expertise, and the time and energy of our staff. Through the SGH Volunteers Club, an employee volunteerism programme, our staff are able to contribute to the community through a wide range of activities and outreach projects.

Our Programmes

1) Befriender (Outreach & Befriending)
Do you know that SGH has more than 120 needy patients aged 65 years and above with very little social support who are referred to MSW yearly? Our staff volunteers send these needy patients home after office hours upon their discharge, distribute food hampers, provide medication supervision, and offer them companionship and a listening ear.

2) SGH Charity Bazaar
We will collect donated clothes, toys, books, CDs/DVDs for the Charity Bazaar annually in August. Our staff volunteers will sell the goods at the Fund Raising bazaar, pick up bargains and contribute to a worthy cause as well!

3) President’s Challenge
SGH and SingHealth have adopted President’s Challenge as one of our key outreach programmes since 2005. Over the last five years, SGH has raised close to $1 million and benefited over 100 charities under President’s Challenge. SGH staff have also touched the lives of the beneficiaries by conducting health screenings and falls prevention workshops for different beneficiaries each year.

4) SGH Community Day
The annual SGH Community Day programme is SGH’s signature community outreach programme that involves staff from all departments. Held annually in November, the marquee event requires more than 100 volunteers to reach out to the needy beneficiaries that vary from year to year.

5) SGH GroomOver
The Groomover is an annual spring cleaning project for selected needy and elderly SGH patients from the COPE or Care Outreach group identified by social workers. More than 200 volunteers will be required to spruce up the homes in time for the lunar new year.
