Scenario: Switch to higher ward type: Mr Teo, 77 Years old
Mr Teo experienced breathlessness and was admitted after seeking
treatment at A&E. He chose C ward type but decided to switch to B1
ward type after 1 day’s stay. The billing officer explained that Mr
Teo’s hospital bill would be upsized retrospectively but he is able to
use his Medisave and his Integrated Shield plan to cover part of his
bill.
Mr Teo understood the implications and went ahead to pay the required
deposit online before he was transferred to an available B1 bed.

Scenario: Switch to lower ward type (Means Testing required) : Mdm Lim, 60 years old
Mdm Lim had a fall and required surgery and hospitalization. She stayed in B1 ward type for 25 days and her interim bill amounted to $45,151.47. Medisave and the estimated Medishield Life claim could cover about 60% of the bill and the remaining $16,128.27 would have to be paid using cash. Mdm Lim spoke to the billing officer who advised her to consider switching to a subsidised ward type to enjoy higher government subsidies.
Her spouse and children supported her decision to switch to subsidised ward and they submitted their income information for Means Testing. Based on the total family income and headcount, Mdm Lim was eligible for B2 ward type. The transfer was done as soon as a B2 bed was available and Mdm Lim was charged at B2 rate for the next 17 days before she was discharged. She managed to get a partial refund from the initial cash deposit made during admission.
