Transanal Irrigation (TAI) is a conservative management technique used to empty the bowels in a predictable and controlled way. It involves introducing lukewarm water into the colon via the rectum using a specially designed system. The water stimulates the colon to contract and push out stool. It can help manage both constipation and fecal incontinence.
TAI can help people with:
A system (like Peristeen® or Navina®) includes a pump, water reservoir, and a rectal catheter.
When taught by a nurse and performed correctly, TAI is very safe. Minor risks include mild discomfort or minor rectal bleeding. A very rare risk is bowel perforation, which is avoided by using correct technique and the safety mechanisms of the device.
