Every day, automated systems and robots work quietly at SGH, supporting healthcare teams by managing routine but essential tasks.
From autonomous mobile robots moving between buildings with vital medical supplies to automated systems managing laboratory specimens, we are building a future where technology supports routine tasks, allowing healthcare professionals to focus on what matters most—patient care.
From concept to clinical application, our engineering teams support research and innovation across the entire healthcare continuum; enabling breakthrough discoveries, developing novel medical devices, and translating research outcomes into practical healthcare solutions. As part of SGH research and innovation continuum efforts, our robotics initiatives represent more than just automation; they embody our vision of a smarter, more efficient healthcare ecosystem in Singapore.
At SGH, we house two premier research facilities that are advancing healthcare through engineering innovation:
| The Robot Enhanced Biomechanics & Engineering Laboratory (REBEL) |
Cell and Tissue Bioengineering (CTBioE) |
|---|---|
REBEL is a multidisciplinary research facility specialising in orthopaedic biomechanics. Our capabilities include:
|
Our CTBioE facility supports various research initiatives through:

Our 24/7 Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) system in the CSM laboratories at Academia has revolutionised specimen transfers, eliminating manual deliveries previously handled by Healthcare Assistants. This automation has freed staff to focus on critical tasks such as specimen accountability verification and sorting.
Following a successful six-month trial, we've implemented AMRs for medication and sterile surgical instrument deliveries between Singapore General Hospital and SingHealth Tower. This innovative system demonstrates the feasibility of cross-building automation and successful co-sharing of lifts between AMRs and humans, addressing crucial manpower challenges whilst optimising workload distribution.
Our teams have successfully:
As our campus expands, we're advancing robotics capabilities to meet growing healthcare demands. Our future initiatives include:
Expanding AMR delivery networks to the new Emergency Building and Elective Care Centre
Enhancing cross-building automation capabilities
Supporting Phase 2B of campus development (beyond 2035)
Contributing to the vision of a digital hospital
Our engineering teams are actively pursuing:
What sets us apart is our unique position within Singapore's largest acute hospital setting, enabling seamless collaboration between engineers, clinicians, and researchers.
