Major and complex surgeries are being more routinely performed these days. There is a substantial body of literature examining the preoperative, acutely postoperative and subacute care of the surgical patients. The pathophysiology and the clinical predicting model for postoperative pulmonary complications will be reviewed. This course aims at equipping physiotherapists with knowledge and skills necessary to manage the complex surgical patients, in particularly the obese, elderly and the frail surgical candidate. Subspecialized care for patients who underwent head and neck surgery, lung surgery and solid organ transplant will also be covered. The emerging evidence supporting the roles of physiotherapy in perioperative period will be explored.
