Your Hospital Stay

Thank you for choosing Singapore General Hospital as your medical treatment centre. 

To help you arrange for your admission to the hospital, you will find in this section, general information on our procedures and policies. You will also find details of services and facilities that we provide to make your hospital stay a comfortable and convenient experience.

You may also find out more about our hospitalization process and things to note when you are hospitalized.


Before Your Stay


Except for emergency cases, patients are admitted to Singapore General Hospital only on recommendation from their medical specialist from the Specialist Outpatient Clinic. Once a date for admission is confirmed, patients are accommodated and register themselves for their desired accommodation class.

Centre (PAC) to get advise or:

  • Estimated bill size
  • Average length of stay
  • Various modes of payment accepted
  • Documents to bring on the day of admission
  • Assistance available for those in financial difficulties
The Pre-Admission Centre will also schedule appointments for patients to undergo compulsory pre-admission investigations such as blood tests, chest x-ray, electrocardiogram, which are conducted one week before admission.

Admission Day


Patients who are scheduled for admission (elective admission) by their medical specialist from the Specialist Outpatient Clinic are requested to report to the Admissions Office at the appointed date and time for registration.

In the event of emergency, admission to Singapore General Hospital is arranged through the Accident & Emergency Department.

Items To Bring For Admission


For admission registration, you should bring along original copies of the following documents:

  • Inpatient Admission Authorisation Form
  • NRIC or Birth Certificate (if the patient is under 15 years old) or Passport (if the patient is a foreigner)
  • Medical Benefit Identification Documents:
    • Civil Service Card or Medical Benefit Identification Memorandum for Civil Servants
    • For Hospital Identity Card or Letter of Guarantee for Employees of Companies
    • CPF Membership card, valid P, Q, R Pass or Employment Pass and letter from employer for Work Permit or Employment Pass Holder

Personal Items

You should bring along toiletries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, hairbrush /comb and a pair of slippers. Class A1 ward patients will receive a toiletries set comprising of a face towel, shower cap, toothbrush kit and comb presented in a pouch. For your personal comfort, you may also bring your own pyjamas to wear during your stay at the Hospital and a set of clothing to wear on the day of discharge.

During Your Stay

Ward Orientation

When you arrive at the ward, our ward staff will orientate you to the ward and the facilities available. An orientation video is also available for viewing at your leisure. A ward doctor will visit you to take your detailed medical history and carry out any necessary clinical tests and/or examinations.

Wrist Identification Band

For your safety, a wrist band detailing your name, NRIC number and ward number will be given to you for wearing. Please wear it at all times while in the Hospital for identification purposes.

Daily Ward Routine

The standard daily routine in the ward comprises of ward rounds by doctors, medication, meals, visiting hours and bedtime. This routine may vary if patients are required to undergo laboratory tests, x-ray, or other clinical procedures.

Going Home



Your doctor will inform you when you are ready for discharge. You are advised to get a family member or friend to accompany you home on the day of discharge. 

A discharge certificate will be given to you before you leave the ward. If you need a medical certificate, please inform the doctor or nurse in advance so that it can be prepared before you leave. 


You can collect your discharge medications with medication counselling from Discharge Pharmacy at Block 4 Level 2. 

Check Out Time 

The Hospital’s check out time is 10.00am. Patients who check out after 1.00pm will be charged an additional day’s rate. If you are waiting for someone to take you home, you may do so at the Discharge Lounge. There is no charge for use of the Discharge Lounge.

Follow-Up Care and Appointment

Before you leave the ward, you will be advised on how to take care of yourself during your recuperation at home.

The ward staff may give you an appointment for follow-up at the Specialist Outpatient Clinic. Should you need to reschedule your outpatient appointment after your discharge, please call our appointments line, at Tel: 6321 4377, or fill up the Make or Change Appointment online.
