Clinical Pearls For The Management of Poisoning And Toxicology

20 July 2023

Medical toxicology encompasses several key areas - overdose and poisonings, bites and stings and envenomation, as well as inhalational injuries. While pharmacology and toxicology approach the study of drugs from different angles, both have significant areas of intersection and are essential to ensure safe and effective drug use in clinical practice. In this short lecture, we shall explore some interesting clinical cases and vignettes that one would commonly encounter as a toxicologist, and provide an overview of the work that the SingHealth Toxicology Service has done.

After the lecture, the participants will be able to gain an understanding of:

  • General principles in managing the poisoned patient
  • Management of paracetamol overdose
  • Management of sedative-hypnotic overdose
  • Management of tricyclic antidepressant overdose
  • Management of beta blocker and calcium channel blocker overdose
  • Overview of SingHealth Toxicology Service statistics
