Limitations of Antiarrhythmic Drugs in the Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation

Antiarrhythmic drug (AAD) therapy aims to restore and maintain sinus rhythm in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). They remain the main therapeutic agents to restore and maintain sinus rhythm in patients with AF. There are still questions on the efficacy, tolerability and safety of these drugs. This lecture will review the mechanism of actions of AADs, its efficacy and safety in treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation. Case based discussion will be conducted to highlight AAD considerations in the management of patients with different clinical scenarios.


After the lecture, the participants will be able to gain an understanding on:

  • Rhythm control measures in AF
  • AAD and its efficacy on restoring and maintain sinus rhythm
  • Limitations and side effects of AAD
