XYLOSE ABSORPTION TEST (ADULT), URINE

Description

Indications

Specimen Required

​20 mL urine in sterile container. Collect 2 timed specimens (First 2-hr urine and total 5-hr urine).

1. Fast patient overnight.

2. At 7 am, empty bladder and discard urine. Give oral dose of 5g d(+) xylose in about 250 mL of water.

3. Withhold food intake but encourage fluid intake.

4. Collect urine (7 - 9 am). Label this "Specimen 1".

5. Collect urine (9 - 12 pm). Label this "Specimen 2".

6. Send both urine specimens to the laboratory.
