​Measles IgM or IgG Antibody 

Measles Total Antibody

Indications

Specimen Required

​3 – 5 mL plain blood.

(a) To diagnose acute measles infection, send single acute sample for measles IgM and a second serum taken two weeks later for measles total antibody.

(b) To diagnose past infection or for evidence of immunity, send single sample for measles IgG.

Storage and Transport

​Refrigerate samples if delay in transporting to laboratory is anticipated. Do not freeze.

Method

Measles IgM : Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA) 

Measles IgG : Enzyme linked fluorescence assay (ELFA)

Measles total Ab : Complement Fixation Test (CFT) 

Test Results

Acute infection : Acute serum positive for IgM. A negative IgM result within 5 days of onset of illness should be repeated +/- send convalescent sample for total Ab (a ≥ 4x rise in titre will confirm acute infection). 

Past infection/Immunity : Presence of IgG in the absence of specific IgM
