CHROMOSOME ANALYSIS OF FETAL CORD BLOOD/NEONATE BLOOD

Description

Indications

​- Abnormal ultrasound findings
- Neonate with multiple congenital abnormalities

Specimen Required

​Fetal cord blood/neonate blood (2 – 3ml) in sodium/lithium heparin immediately to prevent clotting. Invert gently several times to mix the blood and vial contents (clotted blood will not work). Do not use EDTA or plain tubes.

​Normal or Abnormal. If Abnormal, the karyotypic abnormality is described in accordance to the International System for Human Cytogenomic Nomenclature (ISCN, 2016).

Remarks

​Indicate clearly the clinical diagnosis or ultrasound findings on the cytogenetics request form or CPOE. Do not despatch a specimen near a weekend or a public holiday to avoid unnecessary delays.
