A Tradition of Excellence

The Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine was established in 1995 on Outram Campus from the historical Medical Unit III. We have been caring for Singaporeans with lung diseases and critical illnesses for more than two decades. The Department will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year (2020).

Clinical Services

Our staff provide the most current options in diagnosing and treating patients with allergy-related conditions, lung diseases and critical illnesses.  We are a one-stop centre that boasts a comprehensive range of sub-specialty services such as:

  • Allergy

  • Asthma

  • Bronchiectasis

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Chronic Non-invasive Ventilation (NIV)

  • Diagnostic Bronchoscopy  

    • Flexible bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), transbronchial lung biopsy (including cryobiopsy)

  • Interventional Pulmonology

    • Rigid bronchoscopy, airway ablative therapy, airway stenting, brachytherapy, whole lung lavage

    • Thoracocentesis, intercostal drains, indwelling pleural catheters, pleuroscopy

  • Intensive Care Medicine  

    • The first dedicated Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VV ECMO) Team in the country. We are one of the two national centres that offers VV ECMO for patients with acute respiratory distress disorder (ARDS).

  • Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) 

    • Diffuse parenchymal lung disease, complex and rare lung conditions

  • Pulmonary Function Laboratory 

    • Spirometry, body plethysmography, diffusion capacity testing, bronchoprovocation tests, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)
