If You Change Your Room Type During Your Stay

Changing of room type is subject to availability of beds and the following conditions:

a) Upgrading

Should you request to upgrade to a higher class of accommodation, all charges (except daily standard ward fees) incurred at the lower ward class up till the upgrading will be recomputed and charged at the higher class rate.

Upgrading Criteria

1. Based on bed availability

2. Payment of Cash deposit

3. Future Outpatient consultations will be charged as private patient

All upgrade are subject to bed availability and all charges (except daily standard ward fees) will be backdated to the day of admission. Once you have made your decision and submit the request to our care team, we will be able to assess and provide the necessary financial counselling. We will try to secure a bed for you as soon as possible.

Scenario: Switch to higher ward type: Mr Teo, 77 Years old
Mr Teo experienced breathlessness and was admitted after seeking treatment at A&E. He chose C ward type but decided to switch to B1 ward type after 1 day’s stay. The billing officer explained that Mr Teo’s hospital bill would be upsized retrospectively but he is able to use his Medisave and his Integrated Shield plan to cover part of his bill. The billing officer emphasized that his outpatient follow-up at SOC would be under Private rate, this means that he would not be able to enjoy the government subsidies or Pioneer Generation subsidies. Mr Teo understood the implications and went ahead to pay the required deposit online before he was transferred to an available B1 bed.

b) Downgrading

Downgrading of ward class will be allowed for patients under ICU/ICA/HD management, or patients in Class A1 or B1 wards, if they satisfy the criteria of a Means Test.

Scenario: Switch to lower ward type (Means Testing required) : Mdm Lim, 60 years old
Mdm Lim had a fall and required surgery and hospitalization. She stayed in B1 ward type for 25 days and her interim bill amounted to $45,151.47. Medisave and the estimated Medishield Life claim could cover about 60% of the bill and the remaining $16,128.27 would have to be paid using cash. Mdm Lim spoke to the billing officer who advised her to consider switching to a subsidized ward type to enjoy higher government subsidies.
Her spouse and children supported her decision to switch to subsidized ward and they submitted their income information for Means Testing. Based on the total family income and headcount, Mdm Lim was eligible for B2 ward type. The transfer was done as soon as a B2 bed was available and Mdm Lim was charged at B2 rate for the next 17 days before she was discharged. She managed to get a partial refund from the initial cash deposit made during admission.

Documents Required

Patient who are in Private class (A1 & B1), switching to subsidize class (B2 & C) will have to go through means testing and are subject to bed availability. For mean testing, we would require the following documents for verification and processing:

  • Payslips
  • Property tax or income tax statements
  • Employer's letter (Letter of confirmation in appointment)
  • CPF statement.

Social Overstayers

Patients who are fit for discharge but insisted on staying on will be charged the full cost of the period of their overstay, from the 7th calendar day after the hospital has assisted in finding a placement in a step-down care facility.
