Vascular anomalies refer to a group of conditions where blood or lymphatic vessels develop abnormally and represent a spectrum of disorders ranging from simple birthmarks to life-threatening entities. These can be broadly divided into vascular tumours and vascular malformations.
The Vascular Anomalies Clinic at Singapore General Hospital provides coordinated, specialist-led care for adult patients with complex vascular anomalies, including both vascular malformations and vascular tumours. As a multidisciplinary service, the clinic brings together expertise from Dermatology, Haematology, Interventional Radiology, Neuro-Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and other supporting specialties to ensure accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and long-term monitoring of these conditions.
The clinic manages a spectrum of conditions for adults including venous and lymphatic malformations (low-flow vascular malformations), arteriovenous malformations (high-flow vascular malformations), and syndromic vascular malformations such as Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome. These disorders vary in presentation, ranging from isolated skin lesions to deeper tissue or multi-system involvement, and comprehensive evaluation is required.
Management strategies for vascular anomalies are also varied and include observation, medication, interventional procedures such as embolisation and sclerotherapy, laser treatment and/or surgery. More than one treatment modality may be required, and this multidisciplinary clinic set-up helps facilitate better treatment planning with the aims of optimising symptom-control, reducing disease burden and improving functional outcomes while minimising procedure risks.
Children with vascular anomalies are cared for at KKH Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
