Haemophilia Rehabilitation

Synonym(s):
Haemophilia is a hereditary blood disorder that affects mainly the male population. This condition impairs the body’s ability to control blood clotting. Patients with this condition may experience bleeding into their joints. The main joints that are affected are the elbows, knees and ankles. Sometimes they may also experience bleeding in their soft tissues.  The bleeding may occur spontaneously without any fall, strain or trauma. Recurrent bleed may result in joint damage and deformity.

In the haemophilia clinic, we see this group of patients who has internal bleeding to their joints or muscles.

Physiotherapy for these patients include:
  •  Monitoring patient’s joint health using the Haemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS)
  •  Preventive exercises to improve muscle strength and flexibility of joints
  •  Education on management of acute bleeds
