STOOL ELASTASE

​One teaspoon or about 10mm³ of stool in a clean leak-proof container with a tight-fitting lid. 

Stool mixed with transport media, preservative or urine is unsuitable for testing.

If it is not possible to despatch the stool specimen to the laboratory within the same day, the specimen should be kept at:

• 2 - 8^oC in the refrigerator, to be received by the laboratory within 7 days, or
• Frozen at -20^oC or below and sent with ice pack, for specimens reaching the laboratory beyond 7 days. 

​Enzyme Immunoassay

​Reported as Normal, Moderate Low or Severe Low with value and reference range.
Concentrations of Pancreatic Elastase 1 are reported in µg E1/g stool.

​Range 2 - 14 days

​Batch tested, fornightly

​The Elastase concentration may be lowered in watery stool. In the event of pathological results for watery stool samples, confirmation testing, using formed stool samples, is suggested.

The stool elastase test has not been evaluated for ileostomy fluid or stoma output.
