3 – 5 mL plain blood. (a) To diagnose acute infection, send single sample for Toxoplasma IgM and IgG and second serum taken at least 14 days later if indicated. (b) To diagnose previous infection, send single sample for Toxoplasma IgG. Note: Please provide relevant clinical details especially if the patient is pregnant. Convalescent samples should be labelled as 2nd sample & please quote the lab number of the 1st sample to pair testing. |

Acute infection: Paired sera showing seroconversion or rising Toxoplasma IgG antibody levels. Note: IgM usually appears within 1 week after infection, peaks within 1-3 months and can persist for up to 2 years or more in some individuals. Some individuals may not mount IgM response. Past infection: Toxoplasma IgG positive Note: IgG usually appears 2 weeks after infection and peaks around 3 months, remaining at plateau level for 6 months before slowly declining after 1 year. Immunocompromised/suppressed patients may not mount detectable IgG responses. |
