Function PROMs Oswestry Disability Index

Synonym(s):

Recovery from spinal conditions is often measured not only by clinical indicators, but also by how well patients are able to perform daily activities. At Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are used to assess functional recovery following thoracolumbar spinal fusion. Outcomes are measured using the Oswestry Disability Index, which evaluates the impact of back-related conditions on daily life.

For the January to December 2025 data collection period, 122 patients who underwent thoracolumbar spinal fusion had both pre-surgery and six-month post-surgery Oswestry Disability Index scores available for comparison. Six months after surgery, 85.2% of patients reported improved function, while 0.8% reported no change and 13.9% reported worsened function.

By collecting and analysing PROMs, SGH continues to strengthen patient-centred care and gain a deeper understanding of outcomes that matter most to patients during their recovery journey.
