Full-length Femur Imaging (FFI)

Synonym(s):

What is FFI?

Full-length femur imaging utilises Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) technology to provide a comprehensive view of the bilateral femurs, from the hip to just above the knee. This low-radiation scan is quick, safe and non-invasive, typically taking less than five minutes per femur. Both femurs are imaged to allow for comparison. This technology helps us detect changes in bone density, including cortical thickening and stress fractures. It is an effective tool to detect potential fracture concerns.

What to do before the test

Clothing

Wear loose-fitting clothing without any buttons or metallic accessories such as hooks, zippers, or belts. You may be asked to remove your clothing and put on a hospital gown.

You may eat and drink as usual; no fasting is required.

Your scan will include bone mineral density (BMD) imaging, please avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before the test.

During the Test

The procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. You will lie still on an examination table while the imaging is performed. The process is typically painless and comfortable. If you experience any discomfort or concerns during the examination, please alert the attending staff.
