Synonym(s):

Spine surgery is a procedure recommended for various conditions such as traumatic injuries, mass lesions, degenerative conditions, and infections. If you have been advised to undergo spine surgery, here is a detailed guide on what to expect before, during, and after the surgery.

Before Surgery

Prior to the surgery, it is important to inform your doctor about any medical conditions or allergies you may have, especially if you have a history of reactions to medications or bleeding disorders. If you are taking medications that thin your blood, such as aspirin or certain supplements, your doctor will provide guidance on managing these prior to the surgery.

Day of Surgery

On the day of the surgery, remember to bring any necessary scan films or X-rays. Avoid eating or drinking for 6-8 hours before the surgery as per the instructions provided by the hospital. You will be briefed on the preparation process by the ward nurses the night before the surgery.

During Surgery

During the surgery, you will receive medication to induce sleep. Various catheters or tubes may be inserted, depending on the requirements of the procedure.

After Surgery

Following the surgery, you will be moved to a monitoring area for observation and further treatment. You may have devices like bedside monitors, infusion pumps, and catheters to assist in your recovery process.

Care after Surgery

Recovery from spine surgery varies for each individual and depends on the specific condition being treated. You may experience temporary or permanent changes in symptoms like weakness, numbness, coordination, or breathing. It is important to report any new or worsening symptoms to your healthcare team for appropriate management.
