Dr. Chung Sze Ryn is a Consultant at the Department of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery, Singapore General Hospital. She is a European Board-Certified Hand Surgeon (EBHS) and the 2024 Best Candidate Award (Gold Medalist) recipient for the Diploma in Hand Surgery. She graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, in 2011 (MBBCh BAO) and obtained her MRCS (Edinburgh) and MMed (Surgery) in 2013 and 2016, respectively. After completing her Hand Surgery residency in 2020, she was admitted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS) in Hand Surgery. She currently serves as the Fellowship Chairman for the Asia Pacific Wrist Association (APWA).
Dr. Chung specialises in wrist arthroscopy and minimally invasive wrist surgery, as well as upper limb spasticity and paralysis surgery. In 2023, she was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) Award by Singapore General Hospital to pursue fellowship training at the Institut de la Main (International Wrist Center), Paris. She also serves as the APWA Travelling Fellowship Director and is internationally recognised for her contributions to the field of wrist and upper limb surgery.
She has received multiple accolades for her contributions to patient care, including the SingHealth Quality Service Award for honouring COVID-19 healthcare heroes and the ‘Service of the Heart’ Award in 2021. An active clinician-educator, Dr. Chung is a Clinical Physician Faculty Member for the SingHealth Hand Surgery Residency Program and a Clinical Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School.
Her research interests include management of complex distal radius fractures, arthroscopic scapholunate reconstruction, and intercarpal ligament injuries. She has been involved in competitive research grants, including an SGD 150,000 Academic Medicine SingHealth study on tissue adhesion and a NTU–SGH collaborative project on tissue adhesives as vessel sealants for microvascular anastomosis. She also developed a novel continuous irrigation technique for minimally invasive management of septic arthritis. In addition, Dr. Chung has a strong interest in the long-term outcomes of hyperselective neurectomy for upper limb spasticity, with her latest publication demonstrating its sustained effectiveness in reducing spasticity and improving function more than four years after surgery.
