A/Prof Tien was trained in both Clinical and Laboratory Haematology, including Transfusion Medicine. After graduating from National University of Singapore with MBBS and Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine), he obtained Fellowship from the Royal College of Australasia in Pathology (Haematology) and Fellowship from the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in Haematology. He is currently a Senior Consultant in the Department of Haematology and Director of Haematology laboratory, and Head, SGH Blood Bank & Cytogenetics in the Department of Clinical Pathology & Molecular Pathology, Singapore General Hospital. He is also the Director of SGH Haemophilia Centre, recognised by the World Federation of Haemophilia as an International Haemophilia Training Centre.
He has concurrent appointments with the National University of Singapore, YLL School of Medicine as a Clinical Associate Professor and Duke-NUS Medical school as an Adjunct Associate Professor and former appointment with Nanyang Technological University, School of Biological Sciences as Adjunct Associate Professor.
Besides general clinical and laboratory haematology, he has an active interest in Coagulation, esp. Bleeding Disorders, and Transfusion Medicine. His other interests include Blood / Bone marrow Morphology and Cytogenetics. He received HMDP Fellowship for training in Advanced Haematology at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, Australia and later HMDP Fellowship for training in Cytogenetics in Mayo Clinic, USA. A/Prof Tien was the President of the 5th Congress of the Asian Pacific Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis held in Singapore in 2008. He was Chairman of Organising Committee for International Haemophilia Course, Malmo Programme held in Singapore 2013.
To-date, he has at least 220 abstracts and 80 publications in international peer-reviewed journals. He has been awarded at least 45 Research Grants. He is a reviewer of Annals, Academy of Medicine, Singapore Medical Journal, Thrombosis Journal, NMRC and BMRC Grants.
