Our Committment to Sustainability

In line with Singapore's GreenGov.SG initiative, SGH is committed to achieving ambitious sustainability goals in reducing carbon emissions and resource consumption. We aim to be the leader and facilitator of green efforts within the healthcare sector by being the first net zero carbon emission healthcare campus in Asia.

Hospital in Nature

Various spaces like the Bicentennial Garden at SGH is a green space that integrates elements of nature to provide little pockets of healing spaces as a way to encourage relief from mental fatigue and stress.

Sustainable Healing Environment

SGH recycles product water produced during the water-intensive dialysis treatment via reverse osmosis (RO) treatment. The treated water is subsequently used for cleaning of common areas and watering of plants.

Energy Reset

SGH has in place Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers located within the staff carpark to encourage the use of EV. We have also replaced existing light fittings to LED fixtures.

Green Healthcare Services

SGH works with various external vendors, to provide recycling and repurpose bins to form a Green Corridor where employees and the public can drop off materials suitable for recycling. This also helps to raise awareness among its employees and reflect on their generation of waste.

SGH conducts regular employee engagement programmes to raise awareness of its sustainability efforts and what can everyone do to contribute in being environmentally friendly.

Recognition of our Sustainability Efforts

Singapore Healthcare Sustainability Symposium 2026 (Most Scalable Solution)

SGH improved the use of preventive anti-epileptic medicines following traumatic brain injury by addressing an overlooked electronic prescribing default that contributed to patients continuing these medicines beyond the recommended one week. Through mandatory documentation of treatment duration, prescribing reminders, targeted education and pharmacist-led reviews, the project reduced episodes of prolonged medication use by 88%.

The initiative is estimated to benefit around 80 patients annually, avoid 3,360 tablets and approximately 99 kg of carbon emissions, save S$ 1,344 in drug costs, and free up 13.3 pharmacist-hours for direct patient care each year.

The team is extending this approach to other neurosurgical conditions and exploring automated review reminders. The project shows how a simple change in prescribing practice can improve patient care, reduce waste and support more sustainable healthcare without additional capital investment.
