Tongue Stretches

Objective

To stretch and improve the range of movement of tongue muscles.

Instructions

​(!) Please only do these exercises as prescribed by a Speech Therapist to avoid hurting yourself while doing so.

For each exercise, you may use gauze to hold your tongue and gently pull.

 

1. Stick out your tongue as far as you can feel a stretch.
2. Hold for 10 seconds.
3. Do this 10 times.

1. Stretch your tongue to one side.
2. Hold for 10 seconds.
3. Do this 10 times.

 

1. Then stretch it to the other side.
2. Hold for 10 seconds.
3. Do this 10 times.

 

1. Stretch your tongue upwards.
2. Hold for 10 seconds.
3. Do this 10 times.

 

1. Stretch your tongue downwards.
2. Hold for 10 seconds.
3. Do this 10 times.

Repeat these exercises 3 times daily.

Precautions

  • If you have had a mouth surgery, please check with your doctor or therapist before starting these exercises.
  • If these exercises cause pain or numbness, stop doing them immediately and inform your doctor or therapist.
