Presenting Title:
Everything, Everywhere, All at Once - Navigating Being the Lone Research Ranger
In most surgical specialties, research is what you do to get into the program, hired or promoted. Longevity in research is limited by a range of competing interests, and as such, the individual who puts up his hand gets inundated with anything vaguely to do with research. The challenge for young budding surgeon scientist would be triage these "arrows" and eventually find focus. In this talk, I will describe my own journey as a surgeon scientist with particular reference to navigating this complex environment to reach the dynamic equilibrium at the end of the tunnel. I will cover a range of differing research approaches including clinical, engineering, bioengineering, molecular biology and clinical trials, and attempt to tie these together to a central theme. At the same time, I hope to highlight my own pearls and perils during my continued growth in an academic institution.
