Preparing for your procedure

You have been scheduled by your doctor to undergo either a High Resolution Esophageal Manometry (HRM) and/or a 24hr pH study. This website will help you to understand what the procedure is like and also the costs involved.

Reminders

Before your appointment: (If you do not follow these instructions, the procedure may be cancelled)

  • The following medications should be stopped before the procedure unless otherwise advised by your doctor
    • Acid medications such as rabeprazole, esomeprazole (nexium), omeprazole, and famotidine, for 1 week
    • Narcotics (tramadol, morphine, codeine etc), benzodiazepines (lorazepam, alprazolam, diazepam) and sleeping medications (zopiclone) for 1 week
    • Motility medicine such as domperidone (motilium), metoclopramide (maxolon) and hyoscine butylbromide (buscopan) for 1 week
    • Blood thinning medications for 3 days (e.g. aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin)
    • Antacids (gaviscon, MMT etc) for 1 day
  • High blood medications or heart medications can be taken before the procedure with as little water as possible
  • Bathe before arrival as you would not be able to do so for 24 hours once the procedure starts. The machine is not waterproof
  • Do not eat or drink for at least 6 to 8 hours before the procedure
  • Please inform your doctor or the staff if you have any previous nose surgery or injury

High Resolution Esophageal Manometry (HRM)

Procedure
  • During this procedure, your nose will be sprayed with a local anaesthetic to numb the nasal area
  • A thin tube will then be carefully placed through your nose and secured to your nose
  • You will lie down and then instructed to swallow some salty water to check your swallowing function
  • This procedure will take roughly 20-30 minutes
 
 

24hr pH Study

Procedure

  • After the HRM has been performed, a thinner tube will be placed again through your nostrils and will be secured to your nose
  • This tube will stay inside you for 24 hours
  • You will be taught how to use the machine to log your symptoms
  • You will have to return the next day to have the tube removed
  • This procedure will take around 15 minutes to complete
