The Lifestyle Enhancement & Fitness Improvement (LIFE) Centre is Singapore’s first hospital-based centre promoting integrated and holistic care for patients with lifestyle-related medical conditions. Facilities at the SGH LIFE Centre are specially customised to meet the needs of patients. It has a fully equipped gym staffed by Physiotherapists prescribing individually tailored exercise programmes as well as providing professional supervision of the exercise sessions.

The following exercise rehabilitation programmes are available for:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Obesity
  • Metabolic Syndrome

Physiotherapy for Osteoporosis

In Singapore as well as the rest of Asia, osteoporosis is becoming an increasing public health problem. The occurrence of osteoporosis is increasing as the population of Singapore is aging rapidly. Our age adjusted rates for osteoporotic hip fracture in women over the age of 50 years are currently among the highest in Asia.

Osteopenia and osteoporosis are diseases with several preventable aspects that can be achieved through lifestyle modification involving exercise. Studies have shown that exercise training can prevent further progression of the disease and help maintain bone density and prevent fractures.

Osteoporosis Exercise Programme:
This exercise programme is designed for individuals diagnosed with low bone mineral density or patients currently diagnosed with osteoporosis. The programme consists of:

  • Individualised fitness assessment
  • Tailored exercise programmes provided through individual or group sessions

Obesity & Metabolic Syndrome Management

Globally, overweight and obesity has become a serious public health issue. Research has shown that being overweight and obese increases one’s risk for developing many chronic illnesses such as diabetes and cardiac diseases. Adopting a healthy lifestyle to achieve meaningful weight loss can significantly reduce the risk of developing these diseases.

The Metabolic Syndrome comprises of several related conditions such as central obesity, low levels of good cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure and high fasting blood sugar. Patients with metabolic syndrome are predisposed to diabetes, heart attacks and strokes. Contrary to common belief, they need not be very obese to develop the metabolic syndrome. They are at risk of developing fatty liver, obstructive sleep apnea and polycystic ovarian disease. These conditions, together with the metabolic syndrome, needs to be treated with aggressive dietary and exercise programmes that tackle the underlying problem of insulin resistance.

Studies show that a structured programme is more effective in helping patients achieve weight loss and better health than standard advice to eat less and exercise more. In fact, a structured exercise programme can reduce blood pressure blood sugar, waist circumference, and triglyceride as well as increase HDL.

Using evidence-based approaches, our physiotherapists will guide you throughout your programme to help you lead a healthier lifestyle and in the process, achieve positive health benefits.

Exercise testing / Resting Metabolic Rate Assessment:
The exercise testing services are offered to assess the individual’s cardio-respiratory (aerobic) fitness levels and also suitability for exercise. This will enable an effective and individually tailored exercise regime to be prescribed and also ensure safety during the exercise sessions. Resting metabolic rate assessments are also available to accurately evaluate the individual’s daily caloric needs. This will then help the individual plan out a balanced diet with appropriate calories to achieve weight management goals.

Therapeutic Fitness / DIABEX Exercise Class:
These are supervised exercise classes led by a team of Physiotherapists and therapy assistants who will ensure safe and effective techniques. A detailed fitness assessment will be conducted prior to the programme to determine the appropriate mode and intensity of exercises. The programme allows patients to adopt an active lifestyle safely.

Physiotherapy for Eating Disorder

The physiotherapist helps to develop a fitness regimen for referred patients who are at or above their healthy weight. Together with the patient, the physiotherapist will work on changing unhealthy exercise patterns to healthy ones and work on individual fitness goals to improve physical health and psychological well-being.
