The department has been in charge of running the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) since May 1995 with the goals of providing state-of-the-art critical care medicine.

The MICU has 8 individual rooms, each equipped with computerized physiological monitoring systems. A variety of sophisticated ventilatory techniques are available including non-invasive ventilation (NIV), airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) and high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV). Our unit also manages patients who require venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for severe lung failure. Another unique feature of this ICU not found elsewhere in this country is the Body Cooling Unit, which is used for patients with heat related disorders.

The unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of intensivists, residents, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists and pharmacists.

The Medical Intermediate Care Area (MICA) is also staffed by intensivists who take care of critically ill patients who do not yet need invasive mechanical ventilation. The premise comprising 10 beds, complements MICU in providing intermediate step-down care for patients with critical illnesses.
