The department has been in charge of running the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) since May 1995 with the goal of excellence in critical care delivery.

The MICU has 8 individual rooms, each equipped with computerized physiological monitoring systems. A variety of sophisticated ventilatory techniques are available including non-invasive ventilation (NIV), airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) and high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV). Another unique feature of this ICU not found elsewhere in this country is the Body Cooling Unit, which is used for patients with heat related disorders.

A new expansion facility MICU (2) that features state-of-the-art facilities and high end technology to better take care of critically ill patients, has just begun formal operations in the last quarter of 2019.

Our unit established a dedicated Venovenous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VV ECMO) Team in 2017. This team is led by medical intensivists and manages patients with severe lung failue who need VV ECMO. We have a retrieval team that is capable of initiating extracorporeal life support in referring hospitals and transporting these patients to SGH.

The MICU is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of intensivists, residents, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists and pharmacists.

The Medical Intermediate Care Area (MICA) is also staffed by intensivists who take care of critically ill patients who do not yet need invasive mechanical ventilation. The premise comprising 10 beds, complements MICU in providing intermediate step-down care for patients with critical illnesses.
