Hip Fracture Rehabilitation

SGH Physiotherapy is involved in the comprehensive management of the geriatric hip fracture patients. These patients come with a wide range of different co-existing disorders and issues that need a multi-disciplinary approach, regardless if their condition requires surgical or conservative management.

It is important to get geriatric hip fracture patients back on their feet as soon as possible. Prolonged immobility may result in high risk of complications which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT), bed sores, chest infection and gradual physical weakness. This progressive decline of frail elderly patients, if left unchecked, could lead to undesirable outcomes or a long recovery period.

Rehabilitation is better facilitated by:
  •  Engaging the patients in the setting of their rehabilitation goals
  •  Customising treatment to their needs
  •  Having carers participate in the patients’ recovery process as appropriate
  •  Working with the other disciplines on issues that might impede recovery
This would help in discharge planning of patients to settings best suited to their desires and needs. Each patient is unique and requires individualised rehabilitation plan that will help improve their physical function, quality of life, optimise and restore their functional independence.
