Glomerulonephritis and Renal Vasculitis Service

Provides in depth consultations on management of all aspects of glomerulonephritis, from explaining biopsy results to treatment options including immunosuppression.
  • Glomerulonephritis is a form of inflammation that affects glomeruli (small filters in the kidney that usually function to remove waste and excess water from the blood).
  • Examples of diseases managed include nephrotic syndrome, IgA Nephropathy, lupus nephritis, primary glomerulopathies (minimal change disease, focal segmental glomerular sclerosis, membranous nephropathy) and renal vasculitides.
  • Nephrotic syndrome is manifest by lower limb swelling and frothy urine. It is caused by damage to the glomeruli allows proteins in the blood to leak into the urine, causing increased urine excretion of protein (proteinuria) and low blood protein.

Collaboration with the Autoimmunity and Rheumatology Center to provide multi-disciplinary care to patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Lupus Nephritis.
  • Lupus nephritis is an inflammation of the kidney caused by SLE (or commonly known as lupus), an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own cells.
