Betamethasone Corticosteroid Nasal Wash Using FLO Powder

About your medicine

Nasal washes are used to temporarily clear your blocked nasal passages caused by conditions such as sinusitis, allergies, rhinitis, congestion and post-nasal drip. Addition of corticosteroids such as Betamethasone to these preparations may offer additional benefit in reducing any inflammation that may be present in the nasal passages.

HOW do I use the medicine?

You will need:

  1. FLO Bottle OR Syringe
  2. FLO powder
  3. Betamethasone 0.1% w/v application (Dermasone brand)

Steps for preparation of solution

  1. Mix one sachet of FLO powder in a 200mL FLO bottle
  2. Remove the cover, and replace the default cap with the spray device
  3. Ensure the bottle is held almost upright. Spray a total of ten full sprays
(equivalent to 1ml (or 1mg) of Betamethasone 0.1% w/v application) into the
FLO solution. Ensure that you press the device firmly and pause between
sprays to ensure that a full spray is delivered.
  4. Shake the mixture to mix well to ensure thorough distribution of the steroid in the solution.
  5. Perform the washing once or twice a day as directed by your doctor.
  6. Mixtures prepared should be used immediately for nasal irrigation (washing), as the steroid may degrade if the mixture is left alone for some time.

Steps for performing washing with FLO bottle

  1. Lean over a basin and insert cap nozzle into nostril. While breathing through your mouth, gently squeeze the FLO bottle until solution starts to drain from the other nostril.
  2. Continue until half of the solution (100ml) has been used.
  3. Repeat procedure on the other nostril with the remaining solution.

Steps for performing washing with a syringe

  1. Syringe out the required volume, depending on the syringe volume.
  2. Lean over a basin and insert the tip of the syringe into nostril. While breathing through your mouth, gently push the syringe plunger until the solution starts to drain from the other nostril.
  3. Repeat the procedure. For each nostril, use half of the solution (100ml).

What are the possible side effects of this medicine?

Side effects are uncommon, and, if they occur, are often mild and tolerable. Local irritation, itching, burning and otalgia (ear ache) have been reported. Seek advice from your healthcare provider if these symptoms bother you.

How should I store this medicine?

Solutions prepared should be used immediately as the steroid may degrade if the mixture is left alone for some time. Normal saline and the Betamethasone application should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight, when not in use.
