Prosthetics & OrthoticsProsthetics & Orthotics (P&O) services provide comprehensive care with preventive, promotive, assistive and rehabilitation intervention. Potential patients are offered assessment and a treatment plan, including the design, measure, casting, manufacture, fitting, delivery, and follow-up of prostheses and orthoses. 

We attend primarily to both inpatient and outpatient at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). We support outpatient service with podiatrist in WALK MDT clinic and Amputee clinic with rehab doctor, nurse and physiotherapist at the SGH rehabilitation centre. We also extend our services in prosthetics and orthotics at Sengkang Hospital (SKH) and Changi General Hospital (CGH). 

All Prosthetists & Orthotists are certified Category 1 International Society of Prosthetic and Orthotic (ISPO) status. We are assisted by a team of specialized technicians who perform the fabrication, repairing, custom-made prostheses and orthoses.

Our Services 

Orthotic Services 

Orthosis is a device applied directly and externally to patient body with the objective of supporting, correcting or compensating for a deformity or weakness. 

The orthoses we are specialise in: 
  • Custom-made orthoses
    • Lower limb orthoses: shoe modification, foot orthoses (FO), ankle foot orthoses (AFO), knee orthoses (KO), knee ankle foot orthoses (KAFO), Hip knee ankle foot orthoses (HKAFO), fracture orthoses (PTB brace, IWKAFO) ….
    • Upper limb orthoses: wrist hand orthoses (WHO)
  • Prefabrication (Off-the-shelf) orthoses  
    • Lower limb orthoses: AFO, hip brace, knee brace
    • Upper limb orthoses: thumb spica, wrist brace, elbow brace, shoulder brace, arm sling …. 
    • Spinal orthoses: back support, lumbar sacral orthoses (LSO), thoracic lumbar sacral orthoses (TLSO)….
    • Cervical orthoses: rigid and soft cervical collars 

Common problems prescription where patients may need an orthosis include: 
  • drop foot following stroke or nerve injury
  • fracture management 
  • Leg length discrepancy/shortening of leg   
  • management of joints weakness and deformities for polio, stroke, CP, club foot, SCI, MD, MS, scoliosis
  • pain management for Rheumatoid arteritis, Osteoarthritis
  • sport related lower and upper limb injuries 
  • chronic wound and deformities of diabetic foot 

Prosthetic services 

Prosthesis is an artificial replacement or externally applied device used to replace wholly or partly an absent or deficient limb segment.  

For people who had amputation as a result of traumatic injuries, vascular disease, tumour, infection (severe case of diabetes) or congenital deformity will be benefited from prostheses as it regains the function and appearance as a full or partial missing limb. 

We specialise in fabricating prostheses for: 
  • Lower limb amputation
    • Partial foot  
    • Below knee 
    • Above knee amputation 
    • Through knee /Knee disarticulation 
    • Hip disarticulation 
  • Upper limb amputation
    • Partial hand 
    • Wrist disarticulation 
    • Below elbow  
    • Elbow disarticulation 
    • Above elbow 
    • Shoulder disarticulation 

Our greatest achievement on prostheses is fabricating Direct Socket for below knee amputation and above knee amputation (BKA &AKA). The socket is using lamination method and fabricate directly on the patient. It takes less than 2 hours for the Direct Socket system to fabricate and fit the device.

Amputee Clinic 

The clinic runs every Tuesday afternoon at the P&O clinic. We run clinic together with Rehab Medicine Doctor, Speciality Nurse Clinician, Physiotherapist and Medical Social Worker. 

We work with interdisciplinary team to provide a rehabilitation service for pre-prosthetic and prosthetic stages as well as long-term follow-up of individuals with upper and lower limb amputation.

Along with an interdisciplinary team, we work together in following areas: 
  • Assessing a suitable level of prostheses for patient’s needs
  • Submitting application form to MSW for funding status if patients have any financial difficulties in paying for their prosthetic limb.
  • Take a cast of patient’s stumps after funding secure
  • Modification, fabrication and fitting of prostheses 
  • Work closely with Physiotherapists to make any necessary adjustments to patient’s prosthesis during gait training.
  • Check out and delivery the prostheses to patient after satisfying with gait and alignment 
  • Planning for further follow up 
  • Prosthetic adjustments, repairs, re-alignment, and componentry upgrading due to rapid growth rates or change in shape and size.

WALK Clinic 

The clinic is run every Monday and Tuesday morning. We work with a podiatrist for wound and offloading treatment to patients with neuropathic ulcers. 

Area of treatment:
  • Biomechanical examination for an ideal insoles or footwear prescription 
  • Neurovascular assessments for patients with diabetes and other chronic wound conditions.
  • Offloading recommendation on insoles, footwear or shoe modifications/other devices
  • Appointments for review to prevent re-ulceration
