Physiotherapy for Autoimmune and Rheumatological Conditions

The common autoimmune and rheumatological conditions which will benefit from Physiotherapy are:
  • Inflammatory arthritis e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Scleroderma or systemic sclerosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Hypermobility Syndrome
  • Gout
These patients usually present with pain, muscle weakness and/or joint stiffness which may cause limitations in their physical, social and vocational function. The aim of Physiotherapy is to help optimise physical abilities through exercises as well as to educate and empower patients in self-efficacious long term management of their chronic conditions.

Most patients will require co-ordinated care from the multi-disciplinary team. To improve communication of care plan and accessibility to Physiotherapy, we provide consultation at Autoimmune and Rheumatology Centre (ARC), SGH Block 5 Level 1

Detailed assessment will be done.  Management plan and desired goals of rehabilitation will be discussed.  Individualized home exercises will be prescribed to improve joint mobility, muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness and daily function.  Patient will be educated on proper biomechanics and work posture to reduce risk of injuries and strains to musculoskeletal system. Walking aids and assistive device will be prescribed as required to improve independence and quality of life.

To encourage patients and to support caregivers, we do regular talks and conduct exercise sessions at public forums and in SGH Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Group.
