Medical Nutrition Therapy for Weight Management - What it is

1) How will you benefit from seeing a dietitian?
You will benefit from seeing a dietitian when your weight is above the healthy weight range and want to learn how to modify your diet to achieve and maintain weight loss.

2) The objective of the medical nutrition therapy
The objective is to help you understand your condition and equip you with the relevant nutrition information to modify your diet for weight management and reduce the risk of other health conditions through diet and lifestyle interventions.

3) What is covered in the session?
During the consultation, the dietitian will perform a detailed nutritional assessment and collect the following information:

  • Weight history and attempts at weight loss
  • Waist circumference, muscle mass and body fat percentage
  • Dietary habits including calories, sugar, fat, fibre and alcohol intake, meal pattern and lifestyle
  • Other health conditions such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol , fatty liver etc.
  • Motivation for weight loss

The dietitian will then provide you with advice on:

  • Basic knowledge of overweight/obesity and its related health consequences
  • The importance of diet and exercise to achieve target body weight
  • How to identify sources of nutrients in the diet that affect body weight
  • Basics of healthy eating – balanced and varied diet with appropriate portion size
  • Optimising your diet and reducing calories, fat, sugar and alcohol intake
  • Meal preparation and eating out tips
  • Desirable behaviour change
  • Individualised meal plan

Body weight, dietary and behavioural changes will be reviewed regularly and further nutrition recommendations and relevant information will be provided accordingly.
