Art Therapy - What it is

Art therapy is a type of psychological treatment that uses visual art making within a therapeutic relationship to help patients with mental health problems, emotional challenges and other psychiatric conditions. Art therapy can be used to improve and inform physical, mental and emotional well-being.

It is a recognised and regulated profession around the world by organisations such as the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK and ANZATA in the Australia and New Zealand.

Art therapy can help people with psychological issues to resolve conflicts, develop interpersonal skills, manage behaviour, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and achieve insight. It can also encourage patients to:
  • verbalise and express complicated feelings
  • explore imagination and creativity
  • develop healthy coping skills 
  • improve self-esteem and confidence
  • identify and clarify issues and concerns
  • increase communication skills
  • share in a safe nurturing environment
  • identify blocks to emotional expression and personal growth.
