Baby Injections

Synonym(s):

All babies will receive three vital injections during their hospitalization, prior to discharge:

1. Vitamin K Injection

  • Newborn babies are born with very little Vitamin K, which helps blood to clot and prevent serious bleeding.
  • This injection is given soon after birth over the thigh muscle.
  • It is safe and only causes mild discomfort at the injection site.

2. Hepatitis B Vaccine

  • This vaccine protects against Hepatitis B, a virus that can cause long-term liver problems.
  • The first dose is given at birth, followed by more doses later according to the national immunisation schedule.
  • National Childhood Immunisation Schedule

3. Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine

  • This vaccine protects your baby from tuberculosis (TB), a serious infection that can affect the lungs and other parts of the body.
  • It is given soon after birth, usually on the left upper arm.
  • A small bump or scar will appear later — this is normal and shows that the vaccine is working.
